Dear ARC PT, I have been noticing some right knee soreness in the last month. It bothers me with some exercises, going down stairs and after sitting for a long time. What should I do? K.M. Naperville Dear K.M. What you are describing is possibly patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS). PFPS is pain or soreness in the front of the knee that is worsened with stairs, running or jumping. PFPS can develop from overuse or starting a new exercise program. If you have changed your exercise program lately, please contact a personal trainer to review your exercise program. A personal trainer can also help you to perform all of your exercises with proper form. Physical therapy can be beneficial in the treatment of PFPS by evaluating your know to determine if your kneecap is moving in the knee joint properly. Another common problem is an imbalance in the different parts of the quadriceps muscle, on the front of the thigh, altering the kneecap mechanics. Please call our clinic to set up a free evaluation to determine the best course of action. Do you have a question for a PT? Please email your questions to shuff@arcphysicaltherapy.com or call our clinic to set up a FREE EVALUATION. 1 877-6-PAINFREE Your question may be included in an addition of the ARC newsletter.
